Iceland: The Poetic Edda

13th century, Old Norse, Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies, Reykjavik.

'My name is Harbard,' called Odin to Thor, who did not recognise his own father.

'Who is that midget over there?' called Thor. 'Who is this moron who wants to cross the fjord?' called back Odin.

'Ferry me across,' commanded Thor. 'Tell me your name first?' shouted Odin.

'I am the son of Odin,' called back Thor. 'Who are you?'

'My name is Harbard,' called Odin.

Story fragment retold from: Larrington, Carolyne, 1996. The Poetic Edda: a new translation by Carolyne Larrington. Oxford University Press. Harbard's Song, pp 69–77 in the non-illustrated edition.
