Minoan Culture

The Bronze Age Mediterranean

15th—16th century BC, Minoan culture: Crete and the southern Aegean.

Could be a scene of women dancing ecstatically on a mountainside.

‘Here is a nice quote’ said Quintin: Above all, the Minoans wanted to see their gods. Somehow, the deities had to be made to appear before the worshippers, and their appearance might take many different forms... trees, birds, snakes...

Minoan gold ring

'The woman dancing at the top of this Minoan gold ring does seem to have the head of a bird, I agree,' said Miranda. 'This ring was found in a tomb at Isopata on Crete and its now in the museum at Irakleion. Dates to about 1500 BC.

'But it doesn't have to be a scene from real life you know! Could be the depiction of a moment from one of their myths, like – Oh I don't know, something like a scene of women dancing ecstatically on a mountainside with one of them holding up the head of a mountain lion they have just torn to pieces with their own bare hands, the woman who is holding it not knowing that it is really the torn head of her own son!'
